Toilet是廁所，上廁是go to the toilet，或answer the call of nature。廁所也叫washroom、bathroom或lavatory，這些都是常用的廁所稱號。Loo則是常用的通俗叫法。廁所也叫water closet、bog，像室外的「茅廁」叫outhouse、privy，在澳洲則稱為dunny，而流動手攜式的便桶又稱為thunderbox。
廁所和生活息息相關，人人天天都要上廁所起碼幾次，所以廁所幽默句人人都懂，例如這一句：Everybody wants to change the world, but nobody wants to change the toilet paper roll；又或：Smile, you are losing weight（請微笑，因為你正在減磅）。
沒人喜歡在吃飯時談廁所，但並非每個廁所都會令人作嘔。事實上，很多廁所的裝潢、設計、地點，或窗外的景緻，都令人讚歎。
世界各地特色廁所
網上很容易便可找都這類報道和照片，例如英國報章Daily Mail在」Loo with a view」的報道中就介紹了世界各地景觀特佳的廁所，Changi Airport（新加坡樟宜機場）三號大樓的男廁就有落地玻璃，一邊小解一邊看飛機升降。
紐西蘭Tasman Glacier的「茅廁」建在「一落千丈」的懸崖邊，令人望而生畏。日本Mumin Papa Café女廁以玻璃作場，如廁時像身處海底，四邊有水族游來游去，皆因廁所建於巨型水族潭中央，造價超過二百萬港元，欣賞水底世界是好，」But beware of the inquisitive(過分好奇的) sea turtle(海龜)」。
A Spotter』s Guide to Toilets介紹世界各地百多個特別的廁所。外形特別的有紐西蘭Wellington的Lobster Loos。顧名思義，這個造價也是二百多萬港元，由著名建築師Bret Thurston設計的廁所像只龍蝦：
It』s hope that the two tentacles(觸鬚), armored in orange steel, will attract tourists to Wellington, though it』s a long way to go.
若你怕高，就很難在三藩市Alcatraz高度設防監獄做警衛，因為廁所設在高塔上，或因如廁時仍要監視下面的動靜，所以廁所以玻璃為牆。由於在高塔上，沒人會見到你，私隱不成問題，亦可360度盡覽三藩市景色。監獄在1963年已停用，現為博物館。
先進國家的人只會投訴廁所不夠衛生，又或不夠豪華，但很多物資貧乏的地區，想找個廁所也難。缺乏廁所引起的問題惹國際關注，2011年就成立了World Toilet Organization（國際廁所組織），亦定了每年11月19日為World Toilet Day（國際廁所日），以「draw global attention to the sanitation(公共衛生的) crisis」。
廁所問題非同小可
組織網頁說，廁所的問題不是微不足道，並列舉原因：
1,000 children died per day from diarrhoeal(腹瀉的) diseases due to poor sanitation in 2013. These deaths are preventable(可以避免的). Clean and safe toilets help keep more girls in school and increase attendance rates(出席率). Far too many girls miss out on education just because of the lack of a clean and safe toilet.
