Magical thinking

How Irrational Beliefs Keep Us Happy, Healthy and Sane(非理性的信念如何令我們開心、健康和神志正常)。

Far from a sign of stupidity(愚昧) or weakness, magical thinking exemplifies(例示) many of the habits of the mind that made humans so evolutionary(進化的) successful.

Once you’ve accepted that the brain constructs(建構) reality, and that the brain has evolved like any other organ to help its owner survive and reproduce, it follows that the brain constructs reality in the most useful way possible for its owner.

Objects carry essences

The key word here is useful, which is not to say accurate(準確性). The brain doesn’t care so much what’s really out there; it just needs to stay alive and be replicated(複製), which might involve telling us a white lie(沒有害處的謊話) now and again.
