上星期提及两种学习英文字词 的方法，并介绍了以主题形式学习字词。这次介绍第二个方法，利用与“金钱”有关的字词，学习一些相关引申用语。
Pass the buck Buck
在某些国家是“（一） 元”的意思，正如在香港、美国等 地，“元”是dollar。英文有more bang for the buck的说法，意思是 “钱花得更值”。Buck又可引申解 作“责任”。Pass the buck是“推 卸责任”的意思，而the buck stops here则是“停止（追究）责任”， 即“不要再追究”的意思。 e.g. Although this computer is more expensive, its configuration gives you more bang for the buck. e.g. Stop passing the buck! Just admit it if you’re wrong. e.g. I’ll carry the can for her. The buck stops here.
Bet one’s bottom dollar Dollar
又有其引申意思，如果 我们说：I can bet my bottom dollar that she’ll marry you，即是：I am sure she’ll marry you。如果连最底 的金钱也下赌注，即是“极肯定” 的意思了。
A dime a dozen Dime
也是货币，在美加等地特 别常用，而根据资料，第一批dime 是在一七九六年在美国发行，其后 开始流通。A dime a dozen是“非常 常见”，也是very common的意思。 e.g. University graduates are a dime a dozen now, so many people gain an edge by obtaining a master’s degree.
Right on the money
当然，谈及金钱，最直接的就 是money。Right on the money是 “准确的”，如果有人说：Your guess is right on the money，就是 说“你猜对了”。
Put one’s money on …
当你愿意付上金钱（put your money on …），就是“你肯定”的 意思，与bet one’s bottom dollar有 点 相 似 。 例 如 ︰ K e n n e t h i s passionate about teaching. I put my money on it.意思就是：“我非常 肯定，Kenneth对教学充满热 诚。”
Throw good money after bad
Throw good money after bad， 从字面也可以猜到与负面的事情有 关。其实，当中的bad是指已花了 大量金钱的事情，例如公司正推行 一个不太可行的计划，即使投资大 量金钱，计划仍然无起色；可是， 公司仍然投放大量资源，就是 throw good money after bad的意 思。
e.g. T h e c o m p a n y h o p e d against hope that the plan would work wonders, but in fact it just threw good money after bad.
其实两种学习英文的方法都不同，没有哪个必然较好，毕竟学习方法视乎个人喜好，但重点是选择适合 自己的方法。能力较佳、希望突破自 己的读者，建议双管齐下，以收更佳效果。
若尝试这个方法，不妨考虑以下 主题，或可给大家一点启发。以“食物”为例，big cheese、sell like hot cakes、have your cake and eat it too、 a fish out of water、like taking candy from a baby、smart cookie、take the bread out of one’s mouth。以“运动” 为例，the ball is in your court、carry the ball、cut a dash、in the swim of things、sail close to wind、front runner。
