上星期提及兩種學習英文字詞 的方法，並介紹了以主題形式學習字詞。這次介紹第二個方法，利用與「金錢」有關的字詞，學習一些相關引申用語。
Pass the buck Buck
在某些國家是「（一） 元」的意思，正如在香港、美國等 地，「元」是dollar。英文有more bang for the buck的說法，意思是 「錢花得更值」。Buck又可引申解 作「責任」。Pass the buck是「推 卸責任」的意思，而the buck stops here則是「停止（追究）責任」， 即「不要再追究」的意思。 e.g. Although this computer is more expensive, its configuration gives you more bang for the buck. e.g. Stop passing the buck! Just admit it if you’re wrong. e.g. I’ll carry the can for her. The buck stops here.
Bet one’s bottom dollar Dollar
又有其引申意思，如果 我們說：I can bet my bottom dollar that she’ll marry you，即是：I am sure she’ll marry you。如果連最底 的金錢也下賭注，即是「極肯定」 的意思了。
A dime a dozen Dime
也是貨幣，在美加等地特 別常用，而根據資料，第一批dime 是在一七九六年在美國發行，其後 開始流通。A dime a dozen是「非常 常見」，也是very common的意思。 e.g. University graduates are a dime a dozen now, so many people gain an edge by obtaining a master’s degree.
Right on the money
當然，談及金錢，最直接的就 是money。Right on the money是 「準確的」，如果有人說：Your guess is right on the money，就是 說「你猜對了」。
Put one’s money on …
當你願意付上金錢（put your money on …），就是「你肯定」的 意思，與bet one’s bottom dollar有 點 相 似 。 例 如 ︰ K e n n e t h i s passionate about teaching. I put my money on it.意思就是：「我非常 肯定，Kenneth對教學充滿熱 誠。」
Throw good money after bad
Throw good money after bad， 從字面也可以猜到與負面的事情有 關。其實，當中的bad是指已花了 大量金錢的事情，例如公司正推行 一個不太可行的計劃，即使投資大 量金錢，計劃仍然無起色；可是， 公司仍然投放大量資源，就是 throw good money after bad的意 思。
e.g. T h e c o m p a n y h o p e d against hope that the plan would work wonders, but in fact it just threw good money after bad.
其實兩種學習英文的方法都不同，沒有哪個必然較好，畢竟學習方法視乎個人喜好，但重點是選擇適合 自己的方法。能力較佳、希望突破自 己的讀者，建議雙管齊下，以收更佳效果。
若嘗試這個方法，不妨考慮以下 主題，或可給大家一點啟發。以「食物」為例，big cheese、sell like hot cakes、have your cake and eat it too、 a fish out of water、like taking candy from a baby、smart cookie、take the bread out of one’s mouth。以「運動」 為例，the ball is in your court、carry the ball、cut a dash、in the swim of things、sail close to wind、front runner。
