字典解psychopath为a person suffering from chronic mental disorder with abnormal or violent social behaviour，患有长期精神病、行为异常或有暴力倾向的人，又译作“精神变态者”。
但psychopath未必指真正的精神问题，也泛指an unstable and aggressive person，情绪不稳定和具侵略性的人。在日常用语中，可用简单的psycho代替，例如︰“He’s a psycho!”（“他真变态！”）其实这些通常都是用来骂人的话，少说为佳。
没有人想被称为psychopath，但有专家说，很多成功人士，其实都有psychopath的特征和倾向。Jessica Brown在BBC Capital最近一篇文章写道：
Studies have indicated that, depending where you look, up to one in five of those filling company boardrooms and senior management positions are hiding psychopathic tendencies, using certain personality traits（性格特质）to charm and manipulate（摆布） their way through the workplace.
Company boardrooms是公司的董事会。有研究发现，在企业的高层，潜藏著很多有psychopath倾向的人。他们用魅力和种种方法，在工作的阶梯步步向上。另有调查指，美国的商界领袖就有百分之四是psychopaths。这其实不足为奇，很多人都认为Donald Trump是个psychopath，而他就爬到最高的权力位置，成为美国总统。
The Wisdom of Psychopaths: What Saints, Spies, and Serial Killers Can Teach Us about Success的作者Kevin Dutton就认为，在事业上要取得成功，能力固然是基本，但一些性格特质也是成功与否的关键。
冷酷无情 不顾后果
某些情况下，psychopath的特质可以有帮助。他说：“You need the right kind of personality to enable you to optimally（最佳）operationalise that skill set. There are some professions which, at times, require higher levels of psychopathic traits than we might be comfortable with in everyday life.”
这些所谓的psychopath特质包括ruthlessness和callousness，两种一向被视为“favorable traits for business managers”。Ruthlessness解无情、冷酷、残忍，也解determination（坚决、彻底）。Callousness解冷酷无情、麻木不仁。
Psychopath的另一个性格特质是做事冲动、不顾后果。但在企业的运作上，决策人必须敢冒风险：
Risk-taking goes hand-in-hand with entrepreneurship（企业精神）, according to research from Cambridge University. Tests of 16 entrepreneurs showed they had highly adaptive（适应的）, risk-taking behavior that allowed them to make decisions quickly under stress.
上位快但表现非最佳
难道要成功就要变成psychopath，或做psychopath会做的事？那当然不是。最新的研究发现，有psychopath倾向的人可能上位比别人快，但最终的表现未必就是最佳。
另有专家指出，“psychopaths are more likely to gain power through dominance（支配、控制）, bullying（欺负） and intimidation（恐吓）, rather than respect”。不过，“gaining power is not the same as wielding it effectively”，取得权力，未必代表可以长期紧握。
