字典解psychopath為a person suffering from chronic mental disorder with abnormal or violent social behaviour，患有長期精神病、行為異常或有暴力傾向的人，又譯作「精神變態者」。
但psychopath未必指真正的精神問題，也泛指an unstable and aggressive person，情緒不穩定和具侵略性的人。在日常用語中，可用簡單的psycho代替，例如︰「He’s a psycho!」（「他真變態！」）其實這些通常都是用來罵人的話，少說為佳。
沒有人想被稱為psychopath，但有專家說，很多成功人士，其實都有psychopath的特徵和傾向。Jessica Brown在BBC Capital最近一篇文章寫道：
Studies have indicated that, depending where you look, up to one in five of those filling company boardrooms and senior management positions are hiding psychopathic tendencies, using certain personality traits（性格特質）to charm and manipulate（擺布） their way through the workplace.
Company boardrooms是公司的董事會。有研究發現，在企業的高層，潛藏着很多有psychopath傾向的人。他們用魅力和種種方法，在工作的階梯步步向上。另有調查指，美國的商界領袖就有百分之四是psychopaths。這其實不足為奇，很多人都認為Donald Trump是個psychopath，而他就爬到最高的權力位置，成為美國總統。
The Wisdom of Psychopaths: What Saints, Spies, and Serial Killers Can Teach Us about Success的作者Kevin Dutton就認為，在事業上要取得成功，能力固然是基本，但一些性格特質也是成功與否的關鍵。
冷酷無情 不顧後果
某些情況下，psychopath的特質可以有幫助。他說：「You need the right kind of personality to enable you to optimally（最佳）operationalise that skill set. There are some professions which, at times, require higher levels of psychopathic traits than we might be comfortable with in everyday life.」
這些所謂的psychopath特質包括ruthlessness和callousness，兩種一向被視為「favorable traits for business managers」。Ruthlessness解無情、冷酷、殘忍，也解determination（堅決、徹底）。Callousness解冷酷無情、麻木不仁。
Psychopath的另一個性格特質是做事衝動、不顧後果。但在企業的運作上，決策人必須敢冒風險：
Risk-taking goes hand-in-hand with entrepreneurship（企業精神）, according to research from Cambridge University. Tests of 16 entrepreneurs showed they had highly adaptive（適應的）, risk-taking behavior that allowed them to make decisions quickly under stress.
上位快但表現非最佳
難道要成功就要變成psychopath，或做psychopath會做的事？那當然不是。最新的研究發現，有psychopath傾向的人可能上位比別人快，但最終的表現未必就是最佳。
另有專家指出，「psychopaths are more likely to gain power through dominance（支配、控制）, bullying（欺負） and intimidation（恐嚇）, rather than respect」。不過，「gaining power is not the same as wielding it effectively」，取得權力，未必代表可以長期緊握。
