美国华盛顿州开全美先河,准许用死人遗体制作堆肥,意味人死后化为泥土,滋养大地。此举可减少土葬及火化释出的二氧化碳排放量。

华盛顿州长英斯利周二签署新法案,新葬法将于明年五月起生效,当地人死后,可选择把遗体化为适用于园艺的肥料,回归大地。这意味华盛顿州人死后,除了土葬和火化之外,还多了一个选择,就是成为含有遗体肥的土壤,最后会交给家属,他们可以用来种植花木蔬果。

业界说,堆肥葬自然、安全又环保,不会占据土地资源,也有助于减少碳排放。而堆肥葬的作法是,把遗体放进堆放木屑和稻草等发酵材料的容器中,让它密封分解一个月,最后可以产生两个推车辆的营养泥土。

总部设于西雅图、第一家提供人类遗体堆肥服务公司的创办人斯佩德(Katrina Spade),和华盛顿州立大学合作,透过捐赠的遗体进行临床实验,把遗体放在装有苜蓿、木屑和稻草的钢制容器内,封闭30天。遗体会被微生物自然分解,最后转化成干燥、蓬松且富有养分的肥料,类似在苗圃店面购买的堆肥,适合种植蔬菜。
